Hall Em In Fishable Wood Lures

Our lures are original and have been rigorously tested to make sure we provide you with the very best product we can make. The painted lures are made with hand-picked and very select Spanish Cedar.

Spanish Cedar is used as the standard wood for our lures. We chose this wood because of its density, its lightweight and superior strength to other woods.

All lures have stainless steel .072 screw eyes, 3x split rings, cup washers, and VMC 6x hooks, and are used for strength and durability. We have found that the VMC hooks are very sharp and hold up the best under heavy salt water use.

Construction Process

All lures start out as a block of Spanish Cedar and are hand-turned on the lathe. No duplicators or CNC machines are used. Once turned, they are cut off the remaining block and sanded. Next, lures are pre-drilled for hardware and re-sanded. They then are hand- painted with two coats of oil-base primer and sanded with 600 grit sand paper. Once sanded, they are airbrushed individually with approximately 8-10 coats of different colored enamel paints.

Finally, each lure is then oversprayed with either a silver or gold fleck. Prior to hand-dipping, molded eyes are then glued into the lures. Each lure is singularly hand-dipped in a two part West Systems Epoxy©.

Three final coats are applied and sanded between each coat. After curing, the hardware is then installed by hand.

Process and Variations

Other variations such as fore and aft spinners, and rattles can be applied. Cherry and Mahogany are used when requested. Because of the much heavy densities of these woods, the lures have a faster sink rate. Also, heavier hardware can be used for custom lures. Please see the “Ripper Extended” and “Poon Plug” for more.

We take pride that our products are hand crafted in the USA and we will not sacrifice quality for quantity. Please enjoy our products and we hope these lures cause all our users to have tight lines!

P.S. We also would like to hear reports on our lures (with pictures) and always take constructive criticism to make our products better. We strive for perfection!

Exotic Wood Collectible Lures

These lures are very specific and made for artistic purposes and collectors.  Each are hand turned from carefully selected blocks of wood from all around the world.  Some blocks, such as Sandlewood, are hard to obtain. They might be around because they were brought to the US before the origin country out-lawed the cutting and exportation of the species.

Each of these lures are individually turned and hand sanded. No expense is spared on the hardware of these fine wood lures. They are hand dipped in West Systems epoxy and the same hardware is used as on our fishable painted lures. The hooks on the lures that have feathers on them are Mustad or VMC. These artistic lures are usually purchased for gifts or collector’s items and are really not for fishing.

Custom Hand Crafted Tackle Boxes

Tackle boxes have been at the heart of fishing since the mid 1800's. Our tackle boxes are replicated from an original tackle box that was made around the early 1900's in central Florida by an individual that was making these by hand for a local fish camp. We have obtained an original and tried to improve the design. The standard woods used for the tackle boxes are Spanish cedar, Mahogany and American cherry. Other boxes have been made out of Brazilian cherry and Bolivian Rosewood, but are more expensive because of the rarity of the wood. These tackle boxes are all hand crafted and each take about 50-60 hours to complete.

We hand select each 4x4 board in the rough which range from 10 to 16 feet in length.  Planing the boards is next to straighten and clean up the wood. The boards are in then cut to length for the tackle boxes. Once they are cut they are then re-sawed to produce boards in the correct width.  After being re sawed they are planed, sanded and cut to all the sizes necessary to make the tackle box. All corners on both the tackle box and interior trays are then cut with box joints for unique looks and strength. Once the tackle box and trays are made they are glued up and sanded with a 120 grit. All parts are then smooth-sanded with 220 grit before being stained. After the entire box, trays and interior pieces are stained they are set aside for 2-3 days before the first coat of poly is applied.

The finishing process is the most time consuming. 5-8 coats of poly are hand applied to every part of the tackle box. After every coat they are hand sanded with 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper. Once the box is polyed it is put together and taped up so the hardware can be installed. Every hole is pre-drilled before installation of hardware. All hardware is solid hand-cast brass from hinges, handles and corners, to front latches and screws. Inside the tackle box the nuts and bolts are recessed by hand to ensure the trays stay scratch free. A brass plate is also mounted between the upper handle on the inside with name of client and number of box out of 500.  Each box is signed and numbered on bottom.

These are definitely works of art - each one is unique and I find it hard to let go of them when finished. These custom wooden tackle boxes are strictly made to order -  we only turn out 25 of these each year. Generally, it takes about 6-8 weeks before shipping.
